Book Bike "Loan Ranger" @ Day Relief Centers

Scottsdale Public Library

Democracy | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

SPL partnered with Human Services, Community Bridges, the Phoenix Rescue Mission and ELAINE to offer Day Relief Centers at two faith based communities in Scottsdale to serve people experiencing homelessness. Our book bike “The Loan Ranger” was onsite monthly to offer free paperbacks, collapsible water bottles, first aid kits, pens and pads.

Challenge/Opportunity

People experiencing homelessness was on the rise. With the pandemic, libraries and other community organizations were either closed or provided limited service hours. SPL and Human Services are under the umbrella of Community Services for the City of Scottsdale and work together to help serve the vulnerable population in the community.

Key Elements of Innovation

Library staff met with Human Services department to determine what days and times would be best to have a library presence at both locations and to decide what services would be offered. With all partners in place, padded mats, food, movies, charging devices, computers, printers and connectivity to social services professionals were available to help participants get the appropriate resources and services needed. Both locations were walking distance to bus and trolley lines and located in different parts of the city.

Achieved Outcomes

The project was/is a success. SPL’s Loan Ranger began visiting each location in February providing lists of free resources, books (some were veracious readers) and supplies such as collapsible water bottles and first aid kits. Information on job help resources, library hours and digital resources were shared. A mobile laundry/shower trailer was later added as resources to the locations. Additional partnerships to provide supportive services to this vulnerable population continue to be a focus for the city and library.
