Bicycling Street Skills by Indego

Free Library of Philadelphia, Pa.

Health & Wellness | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

Indego Street Skills is a 90-minute class in partnership with the Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia and Indego Bike Share that gives patrons the knowledge to start bicycling safely. It also covers the use of our city’s bike share system.

Challenge/Opportunity

This partnership between the City of Philadelphia, the private bike share operator, and the civic association of cyclists helps the library offer lifestyle health classes to all. Doing so reduces dependence on automobiles, increases joy, and otherwise helps Philadelphia continue to be the most bicycle friendly big city in America.

Key Elements of Innovation

English Classes are held openly in the Grand Lobby of our Central Library, and in Spanish at the Santore Library. This public, private, and civic partnership helps drive adults to the library as a space of lifelong learning.

Achieved Outcomes

Classes are monthly between March and October, and have thus far educated 60 new riders. The Central Library is also the site of a bike share dock, and we are monitoring increased usage at our location.
