Bibliotastic Book Fair

Baltimore County Public Library

Equity and Inclusion | 2025

Innovation Synopsis

The Bibliotastic Book Fair reimagines the joy of the Scholastic Book Fair through an adults-only, after-hours library experience. It engages millennials and Gen Z who often feel the library has little to offer because they are beyond teen programs and do not yet have children. The event transforms this perception by providing a fun, welcoming space to make social connections, explore creativity and rediscover the library as a place for community. By addressing social isolation and supporting mental well-being, the Bibliotastic Book Fair demonstrates how libraries can innovate to engage and serve new audiences.

Challenge/Opportunity

Emerging adults (late teens through 20s) often stop using library services after aging out of teen programs. Many high school graduates move on to college, leaving a gap to build community for those who choose to stay local or a different path. Social isolation and mental health challenges, amplified during the COVID pandemic, further contribute to disconnection. Free, engaging events like the Bibliotastic Book Fair address these developmental and social needs by fostering connection and belonging. Despite being scheduled on the same day as a signature local event (Preakness), the book fair had strong attendance, demonstrating the library’s ability to attract and engage this underserved audience.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Bibliotastic Book Fair used the framework of Scholastic Book Fairs—blending pop culture and literacy—to create a fun, interactive event reflecting the diverse population of Baltimore County. The centerpiece was a library book fair featuring curated titles selected for emerging adults, with Collection Development staff creating playful blurbs in the style of classic Scholastic ads; all books were available for checkout, not purchase. Attendees engaged in a variety of activities, including using tickets to browse and “purchase” merchandise, like sparkly pens and stickers, enjoying a live 90s/2000s cover band, dancing, karaoke, retro crafts, a professional photo booth and a “cafeteria” area with nostalgic snacks. The event offered a dynamic, social and welcoming environment designed to attract adults who often feel the library has little to offer.

Achieved Outcomes

Bibliotastic Book Fair 2025 had wide appeal across racial demographics as well as the neurodivergent and queer communities. Customers reported traveling from across the county to attend the after-hours event.

- 275 adult customers attended the event, experiencing a sense of wonder and nostalgia, reminding them that they still have a place at the library.
- 33 new library cards were made at Bibliotastic Book Fair 2025.
- 357 items were checked out.

Customer feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many telling us they hope the event will happen again—some wanting another the following month. The success of the event has led us to plan for other programs targeting new adults, including a variety of Dinovember programs.
