Johnson County Library maintains gallery spaces across its 14 branch system, but their long-term curation and oversight had become difficult to sustain. Responsibility rested largely with one staff member alongside other duties, creating both capacity concerns and a significant knowledge gap should staffing change.

InterUrban ArtHouse offers complementary expertise, an extensive artist network and an opportunity to rethink the galleries as a shared community resource.

Together, the organizations developed a model designed to:
• sustain high-quality arts experiences;
• provide equitable, accessible opportunities for artists;
• reduce reliance on a single staff position; and
• expand exhibitions into artist talks, workshops and other public programs.

The partnership transformed a staffing challenge into an opportunity for deeper community engagement and organizational growth.

Johnson County Library and InterUrban ArtHouse built the partnership around a simple principle: each organization contributes what it does best.

InterUrban ArtHouse brings curatorial expertise, relationships with local artists and knowledge of the regional arts ecosystem. The Library provides welcoming, highly visible public spaces and access to audiences throughout Johnson County.

InterUrban ArtHouse oversees artist recruitment, selection and exhibition curation for Library galleries, while Library staff connect exhibitions to programs, outreach and patron experiences.

The model is innovative because it moves beyond a traditional vendor relationship. It treats the community partner as a subject-matter expert and co-creator, distributing responsibility while expanding capacity for both organizations. The result is a sustainable framework other libraries can adapt by identifying community organizations whose expertise complements—and extends—their own.

Indicators of success include:
• consistent professional curation and exhibition turnover across participating Library galleries;
• increased access to highly visible exhibition opportunities for local and regional artists;
• artist talks, workshops and related programs that deepen patron engagement with exhibitions;
• expanded cross-promotion between the Library, InterUrban ArtHouse and participating artists;
• new relationships that have led to additional programs and collaborative opportunities; and
• reduced dependence on a single Library staff member for curatorial expertise and program continuity.
The partnership has also expanded InterUrban ArtHouse’s reach, visibility and organizational capacity while giving the Library access to a much broader network of artists and creative professionals. Staff and patrons have responded positively to the variety, quality and accessibility of the exhibitions and related programming.
