Art Lending Library

Nashville Public Library

Advocacy & Awareness | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

The Art Lending Library launched in 2021 at two Nashville Public Library branches in partnership with Metro Arts to provide community members the opportunity to borrow locally made, original artwork to display in their homes. Every Nashvillian should have access to a creative life, and few places are more accessible than our library.

Challenge/Opportunity

It can be a costly endeavor to find, purchase, and feature original artwork in your home. The Art Lending Library, in partnership with Metro Arts, is meant to bring that art into a person's home at no cost to them. Additionally, local artists can often be overlooked in order for someone to obtain cheaper prints or mass produced artwork. This program provides the opportunity for new, upcoming artists to make a name for themselves in the space they call home.

Key Elements of Innovation

Unlike some art lending programs, this program features 100% original artwork. Each artwork is equipped with mounting materials and directions for easy placement and removal by both borrowers and library staff members

Achieved Outcomes

The collection features 60 unique pieces from Nashville artists. At the time of submission, only 10 pieces are still available to borrow. While two branches currently house collections, within one month of launching the program, there were a flurry of requests to expand to regional libraries around town. This collection also features artwork from more than 50 Davidson County artists.
