Art in Libraries: A Sampler of the KCLS Collection

King County Library System, Wash.

Education - Children & Adults | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

The KCLS art collection is a public asset, encompassing well more than 150 works of art of every kind, both indoors and out, selected through open calls, a roster of acclaimed professional artists, and an art consultant. This catalog includes a sampling of the many pieces library visitors enjoy.

Challenge/Opportunity

Libraries are community resources, funded by residents through property taxes. Most of their investment is on display at all times: library buildings themselves and the collection, in person and online. Without visiting each library, the public can’t see their own extensive art collection. Art has been an important part of KCLS since its inception, incorporating purchases, gifts, donations from Friends groups, and memorials. The 2004 capital bond election included funding to include artwork with every facility. Though capital project updates mention art, there was no way to display the full range of public art in KCLS libraries.

Key Elements of Innovation

A high production value photo catalog of selected works gives patrons and communities a convenient way to browse an extended sample from the KCLS art collection. Expanded promotion through arts venues reaches new audiences in the art community, and attracts new patrons and visitors to the library system. Organized by geographic region and also by artist, the catalog provides a guide for touring KCLS to visit each library’s art, and for art aficionados looking for new discoveries. Professional photography, in-house research, copy writing, design, and production by Community Relations and Graphics staff kept the cost to a minimum.

Achieved Outcomes

Print copies are available for checkout and free downloadable files (iBook, Kindle) are available through OverDrive via the KCLS catalog, with no expiration date. The KCLS Foundation purchased copies as premiums for Major donors. Increased awareness of the KCLS public art collection also enhances visibility and acclaim for featured artists and their works, and expands interest in KCLS throughout the community of art collectors, museums, galleries, artists, and those who may otherwise see little need to visit public libraries. This catalog is a connection with the vibrant local and national art communities in new and deeply personal ways.
