Members of the disabled community often face substantial barriers when trying to locate accessibility services, especially when resources are dispersed across providers and difficult to discover. In the past, the library offered disability-related support reactively, responding to individual inquiries as they were received. This approach was inefficient, limited in reach, and did not raise broader awareness of additional services available. Furthermore, it did not facilitate the development of a connected support network, keeping community members isolated for beneficial organizations and each other. This gap highlighted a critical opportunity to centralize information, build visibility, and proactively connect residents with resources.

This initiative reimagined disability and neurodiversity support by consolidating accessibility resources and services into a single, highly visible exposition model. Instead of relying on individual instances of reactive assistance, the event created a centralized hub where community members could explore a wide variety of options and identify the tools that best matched their needs. The expo also functioned as a collaborative space for participating organizations, enabling them to connect, share expertise, and strengthen their collective impact. By designing the environment around accessibility best practices, such as providing a Quiet Room and offering sensory‑friendly activities, such as Sensory Friendly Story Time, the model offered a welcoming, low‑barrier experience for all visitors. This shift from isolated, request‑based help to a proactive, multi‑resource framework set a new standard for how the library supports Palm beach County’s disabled and neurodiverse community.

The expo has demonstrated steady growth, expanding its reach and impact each year. Attendance increased from 83 participants in the first year to 112 in the second, accompanied by consistent, positive feedback from both community members and participating vendors. Each annual event has attracted new organizations, strengthening the network of accessibility-focused partners and broadening the range of resources available to the public. The initiative has raised countywide awareness of the Disability and Neurodiversity Advocates Committee’s work, leading to an invitation to join the Special Abilities Coalition of Palm Beach County, and the response from residents has also been enthusiastic, prompting requests for the expo to continue as an annual event and contributing to higher attendance at the library’s accessible programs and activities.
