Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

Individuals came to the program needing better reading, writing, and comprehension skills to reach a goal. There are not enough volunteers for individual tutoring.


Key Elements of Innovation

Read English! Study Group: This program is designed for native English speakers as well as for English language learners. The purpose of this study group is to help learners improve their reading and comprehension skills. Learners are grouped based on their prior assessment to maintain the same learning level in the group and to avoid any complications caused by a multilevel ratio. The study group is designed for 4 to 6 learners and 2 facilitators with the intention of adequately assisting every learner. The curriculum includes at least two different genres with each facilitator preparing a lesson plan with his/her own materials to work with 2-3 individuals at a time. English! Study Group: This program is designed for native English speakers as well as English language learners. The learners are instructed in how to organize and express their thoughts in the written form. Facilitators teach English grammar, the structure of the English language and its peculiarities. Individuals in the study group learn how to write essays, reports, letters, resumes, cover letters, as well as how to complete various forms. The group is formed based on prior test assessment to maintain the same skill level in the group. The study group is designed for 4 to 6 learners and 2 facilitators with the purpose of giving as much individual attention as possible


Achieved Outcomes

Each learner of the study groups used to be on a waiting list for months anticipating needed assistance. Designing the above-mentioned study groups solved the waiting issue, and each learner is receiving the help he/she requested.
