A New Era in Staff Communication

Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio

Operations & Management | 2019 | Honorable Mention

Innovation Synopsis

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County Director Paula Brehm-Heeger successfully addressed the communication challenges of a large library system by implementing a weekly informational video featuring her and senior staff, with the goal of increasing the library’s impact on the community through a well-informed, engaged staff.

Challenge/Opportunity

PLCHC staff provided feedback via a survey that they wanted a clear understanding of PLCHC’s priorities and concise, consistent timely information. With 850 staff spread across 41 locations, branches and departments were often silo-ed, in part because communication happened primarily at in-person meetings. A weekly video featuring the new director and senior leadership team helped ensure all staff heard the same, timely message. Also, communication via video helped staff get to know the new director and senior leadership team.

Key Elements of Innovation

PLCHC leveraged popular digital tools to create two new communication channels that continue to evolve based on staff feedback. Paula’s Weekly Perspective, a video series held at rotating locations, features the director and senior leadership members. Topics include community, board and staff meetings; government relations; staff shout outs; and initiative updates. Paula also debuted an annual State of the Library address, which detailed a vision for PLCHC’s future and was recorded and live-streamed for remote viewing.

Achieved Outcomes

Staff feel well-informed and see themselves as part of the library system. The video series averages 200-300 weekly views on the internal blog. The State of the Library post has 1,000+ views. Staff comments:

  • Very inspirational meeting, looking forward to what's to come for our organization!”
  • “They really help my staff feel connected to the organization and to administration.”
  • “I look forward to these videos every week.”
  • "...one word to describe them: AWESOME! They are engaging and build a real connection.”
