A Collection for Memory & Care
Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library (THPL) launched the Memory Care Collection to better support community members affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. With over 27,000 older adults in Hillsborough County living with Alzheimer’s, THPL saw an opportunity to offer meaningful, accessible resources to individuals with memory loss, their caregivers, and families. This dedicated collection promotes independence, encourages cognitive engagement, and reduces feelings of isolation. Materials are available in both English and Spanish and include specially curated books, caregiver guides, and high-demand digital tools. The goal is to create a supportive, dementia-friendly library environment where patrons can find resources tailored to their unique needs—whether they're managing memory loss or supporting a loved one through it. This project is part of THPL’s larger effort to deliver inclusive, community-focused services to underserved populations.
Challenge/Opportunity
With 12% of Hillsborough County's 65+ population affected by Alzheimer's, THPL recognized a growing need for dedicated, accessible resources for those experiencing memory loss. While public libraries serve as essential access points for lifelong learning, traditional collections do not always meet the needs of people with cognitive decline or their caregivers. Staff frequently interacted with caregivers seeking advice, support, and practical tools for navigating memory loss. THPL saw this as a unique opportunity to create a welcoming, low-barrier collection that reflects the realities of these patrons’ lives through materials that promote mental stimulation and dignity for seniors living with dementia.
Key Elements of Innovation
The Memory Care Collection includes 168 fiction and nonfiction items carefully chosen to meet the needs of adults experiencing memory loss, caregivers, and anyone wanting to keep their minds sharp. The collection features popular materials that offer enjoyable and accessible reading experiences. One standout component is the collection of Launchpads preloaded with apps and games like Brain Boost! and Stay Sharp! designed to improve attention span, problem-solving, and memory retention. These are the most frequently circulated items in the collection. Caregiver-focused materials also perform well and provide emotional support and practical advice. Items are available in both English and Spanish, shelved together under a purple Alzheimer’s awareness label, and managed as part of standard collection development.
Achieved Outcomes
Since its launch, the Memory Care Collection has circulated over 585 times, with strong and balanced use of both English and Spanish materials. The most popular items are the adult Launchpads, which feature engaging puzzle games and brain training activities. These tools have resonated strongly with patrons looking to maintain cognitive function in a fun, approachable way. Equally in demand are resources for caregivers, which offer emotional support and guidance in navigating dementia-related challenges. Books geared toward adults with cognitive decline—like The Picture Book of Cats and 100 Heartwarming Short Stories for Seniors—are also among the top circulating titles. The collection has proven to be both cost-effective and impactful, requiring less than $5,000 to implement and minimal staff time to maintain. THPL is confident in the collection’s growing value and relevance to the community.
