Tech Training Certificate of Completion Program
Jacksonville Public Library, Fla.
Innovation Synopsis
With digital literacy increasingly critical, JPL identified a need for training that extended beyond one-shot classes. We created courses consisting of multiple classes on a specific track (Microsoft Office applications, for example). By completing courses, students earn certificates of completion and are aided in achieving personal and professional goals.
Challenge/Opportunity
Many job advertisements indicate a preference for basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and JPL’s computer students wanted to maximize their chances of securing interviews when applying for positions. Others told us that digital proficiencies would improve opportunities within their current jobs. We received requests to provide a form of documentation to certify program participation. Also, students often need help determining what classes to take next based on their skill level, interests and needs.
Key Elements of Innovation
In October 2016 JPL launched a Certificate of Completion Program for technology classes in three areas: Basic Computer Literacy, Microsoft Office Basics and Digital Media and Design Basics. The tracks include a core of required classes supplemented by three electives. The course must be completed within six months and the incentive of earning a certificate upon completion provides strong motivation. Finally, the variety of options for electives gives customers flexibility based on their individual preferences.
Achieved Outcomes
To date 24 certificates have been awarded (three students completed all three tracks). Microsoft Office has been the most popular, with 14 students earning certificates. Typical sentiments: “I am planning to go back to the workforce after four years of being a stay-at-home mom. I am so grateful that you have these free classes.” “Thank you. I am excited. I am 75 years old and it is nice to know I can still accomplish something.”
