With storytimes and other literacy programs on hold, and school doors shuttered, there are fewer writing opportunities for school-age children to express themselves creatively. There is a great need for programming that allows kids to stay engaged imaginatively and celebrate their work in a public way, thus increasing confidence and giving them a finished product to be proud of. It is more vital than ever that we support our young customers in ways that help them stay connected to and excited about learning.

The submissions aren’t edited, nor are they judged or weighted in any way. Stories are welcomed, accepted and published as-is, straight from the submitter’s imagination. We chose to publish on YouTube because it is a platform that young customers use and recognize, and are excited to see their work broadcast on. Participants have reported that it’s very special to receive a link to their original creations on a social media channel.

Since the program was implemented in Spring 2020, we have received over 2,000 views to the Story Sketch videos. The stories submitted range in topic from fairy tales to the loss of a beloved pet. PCPL aims to represent as many voices from the community as possible. In the words of one Story Sketch author, “Mom, can we watch it again and again? I can’t wait for all my friends to see it!”
