Free Library of Philadelphia in a Day

Free Library of Philadelphia, Penn.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

Philadelphia is large, but the Free Library is here, there and everywhere to guide your path! Watch as we visit all 54 locations IN ONE DAY and show that big or small, round or rectangular, new or Carnegie-old, our libraries are indispensable learning landmarks that map our city well.

Challenge/Opportunity

What is 143 square miles in area, founded in 1682, with a population of over 1.5 million people with 20 universities and colleges, two rivers and one Rocky fixation? Philly! Philly also has the highest poverty rate of the ten largest American cities and high illiteracy. These attributes are both challenges and opportunities to highlight the vast physical and learning terrain that is the Free Library, accessible to all and just around the corner.

Key Elements of Innovation

Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods. We venture out, but stick close to home. The "Free Library in a Day" video shows staff and customers the diversity of our buildings and our enormous footprint. Leave it to Kate, our spectacular social media manager, to traverse our system in one very full day; after 115 miles and 12 hours, Kate and her co-pilot husband finally got to rest. We get to rejoice at their journey.

Achieved Outcomes

This video was created for customers, funders and staff to celebrate the scale of the library’s geographic influence. It has received an overwhelmingly positive response, as indicated by the number of comments on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and our blog. First distributed via the library’s e-newsletter, Footnotes, to 200,000+ cardholders, local outlets Curbed Philadelphia and Technical.ly shared it, too. It was icing on the library cake when the Mayor’s Office issued a special “ICYMI” press release!
