Experimental Technology Services

Palo Alto City Library, Calif.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

The Palo Alto City Library deployed three experimental technologies to gauge public interest and acceptance in a library setting: BEAM virtual presence greeters, NAO robotic programing and 3D Design Coaching services.

Challenge/Opportunity

The project sought to challenge the public’s traditional view of the library by engaging them with new technology and technology services. Like many libraries, our strategic priorities include assisting the public in learning new technologies and making sense of the digital world. To this end, these three technologies test the public’s acceptance and inspire dialogue in the community about the future of libraries.

Key Elements of Innovation

The project included three technologies to enhance the library experience: The BEAM is a remote-controlled screen that allows staff to interact with customers virtually. The NAO Robot is a humanoid robot which can be programmed to carry out interactive scripts, sing songs, dance and provide an intriguing way to teach people the fundamentals of computer programming. 3D Design Coaching is a volunteer-based service where customers can learn how to design 3D designs for 3D printing.

Achieved Outcomes

During the project, various measures were captured of public engagement, including opinions and acceptance levels of each technology in the library context. The project will culminate in a community conversation where customers can discuss ideas, concerns and opinions related to the three technologies and the future of libraries.
