Demand-Driven Acquisition of Digital Content

Sno-Isle Libraries, Wash.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

Sno-Isle Libraries allocated resources to support demand-driven acquisition of e-books and e-audio. Michael Hawkins worked with OverDrive developers to craft a profile of publishers to be included in the project; records for these titles appear in the catalog prior to purchase. Customers can access content, which generates a purchase.

Challenge/Opportunity

Demand-driven acquisition engages customers in development of the digital collection. Each title chosen for check out generates a purchase order for the library and adds the title to the collection. Our goals in creating this innovation were to increase size and use of the digital collection and increase unique users of the service. Both of these goals have been met. In addition, we developed a strong partnership with our vendor who created the process for us.

Key Elements of Innovation

The innovation enables a seamless process through which customers browse and access content for titles not yet purchased by the library. We have saved customers time and effort in the request process for a specific collection and our customers have direct impact on the content of the collection through their use.

Achieved Outcomes

In its first year of implementation, unique users of the service have increased by 40 percent. Collection size for e-books has doubled, providing all Sno-Isle customers with access to a wider range of titles. Expansion of the e-audio collection assists library customers in making the transition from discs to digital format.
