Composer and Playwright-in-Residence Programs

Boston Public Library, Mass.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

The "Composer and Playwright-in-Residence" programs give local artists an opportunity to utilize the library’s collections and resources to develop and workshop creative works for public enjoyment at the BPL.

Challenge/Opportunity

The "Composer and Playwright-in-Residence" programs reimagine and create opportunities to engage the public in artistic programming in new and dynamic ways, including enlivening our spaces with music and dance performances and positioning the library experience as more than a center for education and scholarship, but also a place for arts and culture.

Key Elements of Innovation

The musical performances by the composer-in-residence and play by the playwright-in-residence, slated for 2018, engage library users in non-traditional ways and have expanded the BPL’s programming offerings.

Achieved Outcomes

The "Composer and Playwright-in-Residence" programs have increased awareness of the BPL’s role in the arts and culture community in Boston and the library industry.
