Community Connections

Denver Public Library, Colo.

Democracy | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

At Pauline Robinson and Schlessman Family Libraries, during community conversations, participants talked about a lack of “connectedness” and not knowing their neighbors. We recognized a need for events that connected the community and fostered a sense of common goals and purpose.

Challenge/Opportunity

In 2014-2015, Colorado added nearly 101,000 new people, making it the second-fastest growing state in the United States, with the majority moving into the metro Denver area. With so many new people moving into Denver, it can be challenging to know your neighbors and having a common sense of belonging.

Key Elements of Innovation

Both Pauline Robinson and Schlessman Family branch libraries offer customers ways to connect with the community. At Pauline Robinson, they hold monthly “Meet Your Neighbor” events with food, neighborhood resources and more. The Schlessman Family branch has a monthly “Coffee Klatch” and the “Lowry Community Singers” to bring people together. The idea for all of these groups came out of the community conversations that were held at these branches last year.

Achieved Outcomes

By listening to their community, these libraries created new ways for community members to have a sense of “connectedness” and receive direct feedback. This feedback will directly impact strategic decisions for these libraries as well as determine what services are needed and what programs will be offered.
