Teen Smarter Fair

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Workforce and Economic Development | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

As San Antonio works toward being a smart-city, the San Antonio Public Library is enabling teens to be even SMARTER! "Smarter Fair" is an ongoing initiative that provides dynamic opportunities for teens to engage with community leaders and connect with jobs, volunteerism and internships.

Challenge/Opportunity

According to a study by the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for young high school graduates is 17.9 percent. To help teens prepare for the job market, San Antonio Public Library Teen Services created "Smarter Fair," a combination job/resource fair that brought together civic, health, arts, educational and technical-skills businesses and organizations that serve or hire teens. This event was an opportunity to educate teens about what is available to them outside of school.

Key Elements of Innovation

With financial support from Capital One and the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, Teen Services partnered with Molly Pruitt Public Library (a joint use library with NEISD) and Roosevelt High School. Focused around engagement to place students in jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities, the event established a rich environment of engagement with leaders from the community, gave students the chance to practice their interview skills and offered them professional development tips throughout the space.

Achieved Outcomes

The "Smarter Fair" served over 1,500 students at Roosevelt High School, with 11 community partners receiving almost 1,000 email sign-ups. At least 100 students signed up for volunteer opportunities and 10 have been placed in summer positions. At least six students have received full-time summer jobs. Aside from this, teens were also able to get involved in youth programs that will guarantee a safe and productive environment for their growth and development.
