Mobilizing Technology for Customers

Gwinnett County Public Library, Ga.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

The library has built four learning labs with core technology packages of creation software and computers. Customers using these and future labs also have access to equipment and training on items unique to each lab and department through a sharing model making telescopes, sewing machines, STEM and power tools mobile.

Challenge/Opportunity

Realizing the demand for specialized technology across the county, the library has developed a sharing model for equipment and training for customers and staff through a reservation system and courier service. This allows the library to maximize the breadth of programs and training across all 15 branches. Youth services, training, and learn lab staff coordinate this effort for outreach and branch educational programs and individual customer needs.

Key Elements of Innovation

Collaborative relationships between the different departments supporting this service are critical. Open communications and a desire to move the puzzle pieces on schedule through a reservation calendar are also major elements for this successful initiative. The guidance that lab specialists provide along with training for staff and customers allows for greater ease of use and shortens the learning curve for both internal and external customers.

Achieved Outcomes

Readily accessible and current technology tools that support a variety of projects and programs continues to be a growing library and community need. The sharing model allows the library to support multiple specialized community needs. From providing Dremel tools to Arduino programming along with training in using these resources is a service response that offers flexible expertise and equipment that is creating dynamic programs as well as responding to the educational needs of our communities.
