Library and Local Schools Share a Library System

Nashville Public Library, Tenn.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

Nashville Public Library has moved to a new Integrated Library System to better serve our patrons, including students who use NPL at school libraries. NPL has led the entire migration to this new system for itself and Metro Nashville Schools.

Challenge/Opportunity

NPL’s collection moves through local school libraries in a lending program called "Limitless Libraries." The previous ILS managed NPL’s physical items, but it did not communicate directly with Metro Schools' system. The new, shared system improves workflow and streamlines acquisitions so materials can get to students – and all NPL patrons - more quickly. The combined savings from a shared system will free up funds to hire a support team for both NPL and Schools.

Key Elements of Innovation

The new ILS provides greater operational connectivity between NPL and MNPS. Students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 now all have NPL accounts tied to their student ID numbers. Therefore, anyone who can access a school library can use their school ID number to access NPL’s collections. Furthermore, the system also contains a web-based circulation system that will allow for paperless patron registration and electronic delivery of notices and receipts.

Achieved Outcomes

Thanks to a joint system, school librarians can assist students with circulation issues more efficiently. NPL will run reports for Metro schools and load all catalog records for new MNPS library books. This frees up time for school librarians to spend with students. The joint ILS further cements the groundbreaking "Limitless Libraries" partnership between NPL and MNPS and expands students’ access to NPL’s resources even more.
