Koobdooga (A Good Book Backwards): Community Reads

Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, Wash.

Democracy | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

Koobdooga, a joint endeavour between the White Salmon Valley Community Library and the Friends of the Library, is designed to create dialog and build community through the shared experience of reading a good book. It's accompanied by original art works created based on the book and engaging programs.

Challenge/Opportunity

Koobdooga, created to bring community members together to share ideas and experiences through discussions, artwork and lectures based on a book relevant to the community and geographical area. Prior to the programs books are distributed to local artists encouraging them to create art inspired by the books, to be shown in the library gallery. The community is saturated with the book in an effort to get as many community members reading and involved as possible.

Key Elements of Innovation

Koobdooga, designed to reach as many community members as possible has a literary and artistic connection, encouraging local artists to create pieces inspired by the book. The art is displayed for a month, with a “people’s choice” award given at the conclusion of the program. Throughout the month, community members host events on and off sites, including film, book and panels discussions. Each program is unique and attracts broad spectrum of our community.

Achieved Outcomes

The broad range of events and activities offered appealed to multi-generational and ethnically diverse audiences, with an average attendance of 60 people. The events created opportunity for community members to exchange ideas and express themselves, in an atmosphere of inclusion while celebrating differences around a good book. Now in its third year we have increased our book giveaway by 50 percent, in an effort to get enough books for everyone to enjoy a good book.
