Juvenile Injustice Series
Free Library of Philadelphia, Penn.
Innovation Synopsis
The Free Library and its Regional Foundation Center, as well as the Juvenile Law Center and Inliquid collaborated to mount an exhibit and program series addressing youth incarceration in the United States.
Challenge/Opportunity
Philadelphians as a majority minority community faces disproportionate risk of encountering the prison industrial complex. This July, the Democratic National Convention met in Philadelphia. This seemed like the ideal time to address this public policy crisis in a way that would reach leaders across the United States.
Key Elements of Innovation
The program centered on an exhibition of photographs of incarcerated youth and a 1:1 scale model of solitary confinement cell widely used on children in the United States. Throughout the exhibition we programmed a series of lectures and events addressing our prison system.
Achieved Outcomes
Well over 3,500 patrons visited the exhibits and programs throughout the series.
