San Antonio Mini Maker Faire

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Education - Children & Adults | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

The "San Antonio Mini Maker Faire" is an exhibition of San Antonio’s vibrant and creative maker community. Makers (individuals and groups) show off their DIY projects, display their work and share knowledge and skills with the rest of San Antonio.

Challenge/Opportunity

While conducting technology and maker programming at the library, it became clear that a majority of the community was unaware of the resources available to aspiring makers. "Maker Faire" was a way to increase public awareness of the maker community and provide a chance to engage with experienced makers. Local organizations, individual hobbyists and small businesses all participated in the faire, providing a snapshot of the different ways to engage with technology and making.

Key Elements of Innovation

The faire has been a great way to strengthen the Library’s connections to community members and maker organizations. Our involvement has also allowed us to highlight the services and resources we offer and how they complement those of our partners in the event. Additionally, the "Maker Faire" provides an opportunity for community members to be inspired by the different activities and ideas showcased at the event, paving a pathway to new opportunities and careers.

Achieved Outcomes

The event was a great success, with over 1,200 people attending. Makers came from various academic concentrations; from arts, engineering and music to soap-making. The age range of makers was particularly impressive this year – elementary school makers demonstrated structure play, several high school robotics teams showed off their creations and college-aged and older experts and hobbyists shared their projects.
