“Love Them Out Loud” provides new parents with resources to build a foundation for lifelong learning. By providing colorful gift boxes containing an original board book, caregiver tips, interactive activities and a library card application, DML empowers parents to boost their baby’s brain development and ability to learn language.

Challenge/Opportunity

Babies are born ready to learn, but many new parents don’t know how to take advantage of this critical period of development. Distributed by trusted medical and social service professionals, LTOL boxes are full of suggestions for easy, fun activities parents can do at home to engage their young children in daily learning, and set them on the road to reading success. It demonstrates the many easy ways parents can teach literacy in everyday life.

Key Elements of Innovation

There’s a proven correlation between early literacy skills and lifelong health. LTOL boxes are supplied to WIC clinics, youth/family services and educators for distribution to new parents of at-risk newborns. Boxes contain an original board book that entertains babies with colorful illustrations and rhymes that model easy, educational activities for parents and children to experience together. A flipbook offers caregiver tips and a library card application encourages families to fully utilize the library assets.

Achieved Outcomes

DML is committed to supporting early literacy and kindergarten readiness. LTOL is an exciting new element to introduce DML’s resources to new parents who may not know the simple, everyday ways they can influence their baby’s development. By providing them with the tools and inspiration to start their child on the road to reading success, DML serves as a critical community partner to ensure that all area children are kindergarten-ready and active library users.
