Do Space Summer Passport

Do Space, Neb.

Education - Children & Adults | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

The "Do Space Summer Passport" is a free resource that addresses summer learning loss by engaging the entire family in a blended learning process aimed at encouraging reading, coding and other STEM learning.

Challenge/Opportunity

Students lose some of the learning development they gain during the school year while on summer break, unless they undertake a learning activity. Library summer reading programs often focus on maintaining and growing reading levels but may not benefit other academic subjects to the same extent. Cutting-edge STEM resources are often expensive and the free "Summer Passport" facilitates learning for students from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

Key Elements of Innovation

A blended learning tool, children participate and earn passport stamps by attending a class, using activity kits and completing online tutorials. The "Summer Passport’s" flexibility appeals to children with different learning styles and allows families to work together. The combination of technology-focused activities, online learning, and in-person programming set the "Summer Passport" apart from most library summer programming. With many hours of free activities, the "Summer Passport" provides educational experiences for children of diverse backgrounds.

Achieved Outcomes

Passports have been flying off our shelves, with over 2,000 given out in the first two weeks. With the passport's activities, we hope children of all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and learning styles will be able to enter their next school year ready to learn. Our associated youth programming has seen full attendance and engagement with other free learning activities at Do Space is also up.
