Early Literacy Volunteer Corps

Calgary Public Library, Alberta

Health & Wellness | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

Calgary Public Library is building a city-wide network of Early Learning Centres, innovative and vibrant spaces to engage children age zero to five, parents and caregivers in play-based learning. A volunteer role for adults, called "Early Literacy Volunteer Corps," has been developed to support and activate these new centers.

Challenge/Opportunity

Play is the foundation for all future learning and, as such, is integral to healthy, vibrant and sustainable communities. Through the establishment of Early Learning Centres, the library is supporting the development of language and literacy skills for children and contributing to proper brain development. Early Learning Centres provide hands-on activities, props and games to support children as they learn through play.

Key Elements of Innovation

Volunteers participate in training to learn about the importance of play in brain development within early learning. Following training, volunteers support library staff in Early Learning Centres by running small activities, engaging one-on-one with children and parents, keeping play spaces stocked and toys clean (including the toys within the wildly popular Read and Play Kits, early literacy kits on wheels).

Achieved Outcomes

Since 2016, four Early Learning Centres opened. Four centers are scheduled to open this year. In 2016, 94 Early Literacy Volunteer Corps members contributed 2,109 hours and interacted with 7,793 library members. Volunteers also participated in outreach activities, including Story Truck visits to 694 daycares, extending connections into the community. By supporting play through Early Learning Centres, library staff and volunteers are transforming learning and setting children up for future success in school and life.
