Leap into Literacy: Navigate the World Confidently

Toronto Public Library, Ontario

2017 | Honorable Mention

Innovation Synopsis

Due to a lack of services in the community, Toronto Public Library partnered with Community Living Toronto to create the "Leap into Literacy Program," aimed at developing the literacy skills of adults with intellectual disabilities. Participants work to develop skills, enabling them to navigate their world independently and confidently.

Challenge/Opportunity

Adults with intellectual disabilities are one of the most marginalized populations and are less likely to receive adequate support to develop their literacy skills as they age. Consequently, many remain dependent on caregivers for daily assistance and support. The "Leap into Literacy Program" provides an opportunity for adults with intellectual disabilities to learn practical literacy skills that will enable them to function more independently. This program helps to fill a programming gap for this marginalized population.

Key Elements of Innovation

TPL’s "Leap into Literacy Program" offers adults with intellectual disabilities a 10-week program in a safe and welcoming library environment. Program content is flexible and modified according to the group’s literacy levels and challenges, allowing for individual needs to be met. Caregivers are provided with information about library and community resources. This program fills a void within the community and provides an opportunity for the library to support this population and caregivers in an innovative way.

Achieved Outcomes

Skills developed through this program have enabled participants to be more independent, confident and less anxious in their daily lives and encouraged positive social interactions. Some participants have grown to be mentors, helping other participants who struggle or need additional support. The program develops basic literacy skills that will have a positive and lasting impact on both participants and their caregivers. The program will serve as a model for other libraries and community organizations.
