OUT Series - SAPL Celebrates PRIDE

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

During the month of June, the San Antonio Public Library celebrates Pride month and the contributions to culture and society of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or intersex. The Library celebrates Pride Month with the OUT series: month-long programming that celebrates the LGBTI community.

Challenge/Opportunity

The diversity of San Antonio goes beyond ethnic and racial lines, and twenty-first century libraries plan programs that appeal to a variety of people. The Pride events planned in June are a part of the Library’s initiative to be relevant to a dynamic community and appeal to the many segments of a diverse city. The San Antonio Public Library provides inclusive information in a respectful way. In keeping with our own mission, the events and information shared through the library's material, programs, and web sites demonstrate the value that the City places on diversity.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Library has a desire to both reflect the community it serves and educate and inform about the diversity in that community. Putting on informational programming about a culture or set of people educates our community about a part of the community they may not know much about. It also shows individuals in that particular community that the library reflects them as well. The difference comes in education versus promotion. Programs in the OUT series include: Come OUT, Rock OUT, Speak OUT, Work OUT, Break OUT, Get OUT, and Find OUT.

Achieved Outcomes

During Pride month, the San Antonio Public Library invites the community to “Go OUT,” “Check OUT,” “Watch OUT,” and “Seek OUT.” Go out to one of many Library-sponsored and community-sponsored LGBTI events and programs. Check out a recommended reading list of books, and watch out for a list of movies and materials that are of interest to the LGBTI community and available for lending. One patron’s comments on the program included: “I welcome community outreach to AIDS/STD education and the registration of votes. The Library is leading the way to educate.”
