Fade to Books

Newark Public Library, N.J.

Democracy | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

Fade to Books - a Long Branch, New Jersey barbershop literacy program. The Long Branch Free Public Library partnered with five local barbershops, and put children's books/shelving (ages four through 12) into the shops. The children read while waiting for their haircuts and after every ten books read, receive a free haircut.

Challenge/Opportunity

The reading literacy levels of black and Latino boys, as well as socio-economically disadvantaged boys, are significantly lower than their white and Asian affluent counterparts. "Fade to Books" strategically creates reading spaces in a community staple, like their barbershops; and offers incentives for them to read. The program also offers the barbers an opportunity to become mentors and role models to boys that don't have any in their lives.

Key Elements of Innovation

We have partnered with a local book foundation: The Bridge of Books Foundation, and they have donated over 1,000 books for the program. The books are culturally relevant for our local demographic. The barbers have bought into the program and monitor each child's progress. The Long Branch Free Public Library remains relevant by creating sustainable community literacy programs. "Fade to Books" participation also leads to library card enrollment.

Achieved Outcomes

The ultimate goal is to improve their reading literacy levels and to enable them to "identify as readers"; to become "readers" as opposed to reading for school assignments only. This will lead to self empowerment in our community's youth and will benefit our overall community's future; thus, the future of our country. Free haircuts also provide economical relief to our low income families. The program also pays homage to our barbers; as significant community staples.
