BOOMbox: Informal STEAM Learning

Skokie Public Library, Ill.

Education - Children & Adults | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

The "BOOMbox" is a museum-like, informal learning space for grades kindergarten and up that focuses on a different STEAM topic every four months. The space includes mentoring, materials and inspiration for hands-on, self-directed and peer-supported learning around each topic with opportunities to create personal connections through shared interests.

Challenge/Opportunity

To reach audiences that may self-select out of pursuing STEAM topics, the "BOOMbox" welcomes long term engagement in STEAM learning experiences through multiple access points. The space is designed to reach learners of varying abilities, ages and interests in an approachable way. Further, the learner is in control of what they test, discover and revisit without pressures of an expected result and with the support of peers and "BOOMbox" mentors.

Key Elements of Innovation

Each curated "BOOMbox" rotation includes key concepts, suggested activities, relevant kits and equipment and discussion prompts that progress over the course of sixteen weeks. This model ensures continued access to learning by a vast and diverse user group. The space is always staffed by a mentor whose role is to engage in learning alongside patrons and model exploratory learning practices like asking open ended questions. Mentors work consistent shifts to help build rapport with learners.

Achieved Outcomes

"BOOMbox" participants of varying ages, who help each other within the space, have created a community of STEAM-focused learning, exploration and support that reaches beyond the walls of the library. In the last fiscal year, 75 percent of participants helped or received help from a peer. Because of access to emerging technologies and STEAM learning experiences not readily available or supported at home or in school, participants will be more qualified for a 21st century career.
