Wireless Printing

Palm Beach County Library System

2011

Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

Patrons using the Libraries WIFI service were unable to print to the available multi-use print stations. In order to print a document, patrons would have to save their print job to a USB device, sign up for public computer session, load their document, and finally send the document to the printer. Additionally the library computer could not print documents if the corresponding application was not installed. Patrons with MAC computers were unable to print.

Key Elements of Innovation

Library Information Technology staff researched the capabilities of software it already owned and discovered that a WIFI print module was available for the EnvisionWare print management software in use at the library. IT staff only needed to download, install and configure this free software upgrade.

Achieved Outcomes

WIFI printing has been deployed at two branches with plans to deploy it to all other branches in the system this year. The service is easy to use and mirrors the look and feel of the version that patrons already use with the hard-wired public computers. The installation was easy, and the product is stable and reliable. Patrons have been very pleased with this new service that was installed at no cost to the library.
