Update on E-Rate

July 10th, 2014

The FCC is scheduled to vote on Commissioner Tom Wheeler's proposal to overhaul the U.S. E-Rate program on Friday, June 11. Key aspects of the proposal have provoked a strong response from library leaders nationwide.

ULC library directors are at the forefront of advocating two viable funding formulas that will ensure libraries are able to meet community needs in the years to come: funding libraries up to $4 per square foot or at the rate of $150 per average daily visitor. ULC member letters to Chairman Wheeler are posted on the FCC website.

In the words of Hartford Public Library CEO Matt Poland, "Please give libraries the monies we need to deliver what it typically the only free Internet access available....your decision will impact the lives of tens of millions of Americans who depend on their libraries every day for access to the digital universe. That access changes lives."
