URBAN LIBRARIES COUNCIL TO PRESENT FUTURE’S IN THE BALANCE WORKSHOP IN SAN DIEGO

The Urban Libraries Council, through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, is presenting a day-and-a-half long workshop titled “The Future’s in the Balance”  on February 6 and 7 in San Diego.

Based on public opinion research done by the Benton Foundation, “The Future’s in the Balance” workshop is designed to help public library directors, public relations professionals, trustees, and others who speak for the library understand the gaps between the public’s perception of the public library and library professionals’ understanding and communication about the work of the public library.  The workshop help participants identify new language and arguments to gain public understanding and support of library goals.  Each participant will receive a multi-media toolkit created by the Benton Foundation.

The workshop will be facilitated by Laura Isenstein, Director of the Public Library of Des Moines, and Principal, LIA Associates, a training consultancy.  Ms. Isenstein has led numerous national and international workshops for personnel at all types of libraries.  Media and spokesperson training at the workshop will be led by Sue Silk, Founder and President of Media Strategy, Inc., a firm which offers training in communication, presentation and media skills. Andrew Blau, formerly of the Benton Foundation and now Program Officer at the Markle Foundation, will present the Benton Foundation’s research at the workshop.

”We’re tremendously excited to be able to help public libraries translate the results of the Benton Foundation’s research into better communication strategies,” said Joey Rodger, President, ULC.  “ This workshop should not be missed by those concerned about developing and sustaining political and financial support for their libraries.”

The San Diego workshop will be held Saturday, February 6, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, February 7, 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Holiday Inn-On the Bay, 1355 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego.  Workshop registration is $100 (including three meals); ULC member registration is $80.  Registration information is available from ULC, 1603 Orrington, Suite 1080, Evanston, IL 60201, (847) 866-9999 or ulc@gpl.glenview.lib.il.us.

“The Future’s in the Balance” workshop will be offered at three additional locations in Spring 1999:  Atlanta, March 6 and 7; Pittsburgh, April 10 and 11; and Denver, May 15 and 16.

Founded in 1971, the Urban Libraries Council offers advocacy, consulting, research, training and support services to its members.  Membership is open to libraries serving populations of 50,000 or more in U.S. Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas and to library vendors.
