Edge is an initiative to develop benchmarks, identify best practices and offer tools and resources that will help public library leaders evaluate and continually improve the free digital services their libraries provide to communities. This voluntary, self-assessment program advances access to public technology – connecting people to resources and ideas. Our tagline – Where People Connect, Communities Achieve - is the true definition of the Edge Initiative. By providing community-wide access to information in public libraries, more people are able to “connect”, which leads to a more educated and skilled workforce, and an empowered community that utilizes these services to enhance their quality of life.
In March 2011, an unprecedented national coalition joined forces to develop and pilot a series of public access technology benchmarks for public libraries. The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) is leading the Edge Initiative.
