A panel of national elected officials talk about successful locally-developed economic development strategies in their communities. Panelists include Mayor Lee P. Brown of Houston, who focused on neighborhood-oriented government by dividing the city into 88 super neighborhoods to solve problems at the neighborhood level; Mayor Tom Murphy of Pittsburgh, who directed more than $4 billion in new investment in the city, including improvements to residential neighborhoods, greenway trails connecting downtown and neighborhoods, relocation incentives for high tech firms, and the clean-up of old industrial sites; Mayor Bill Purcell of Nashville, whose leadership priorities include good schools in every neighborhood, safe neighborhoods in every part of the city and quality of life shared by all.
