Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

In the fall of 2009, the Georgia Pre-K program enrolled its one millionth student. In order to celebrate and to continue to promote the importance of reading to children, the Junior Leagues of Georgia made a commitment to read to Georgia children for one million minutes this year.

Jeen Edmen from the Columbus Junior League contacted the Columbus Public Library to discuss ideas for connecting volunteer readers with children during Million Minute Read Week, February 22-25, 2010.

Key Elements of Innovation

Lyn Seaman, the Early Learning Initiative Coordinator, suggested that League members volunteer as On Demand Story Time readers. As On Demand Story Time Readers, they would be reading one-on-one or in a small group of three to children of various ages. Library staff is available to help select age appropriate books as needed.
