URBAN LIBRARIES COUNCIL ANNOUNCES ULC/EPIXTECH URBAN PLAYER AWARD

The Urban Libraries Council (ULC) has announced the creation of the ULC/epixtech Urban Player Award.  The award, established in memory of Betty Jane Narver, Chair of ULC Executive Board at the time of her death in December 2001, recognizes library leaders who have provided substantive community leadership during the previous two years. Underwritten by epixtech, the Urban Player Award includes a $1,000 cash prize to the winner as well as $750 in travel expenses to the Annual ULC Membership Breakfast where the award will be presented.

Library leaders have long recognized that as they work to promote economic development, the improvement of public education, and neighborhood enrichment and safety, they enrich the communities they serve and create vital public libraries.  This award underscores this vital link between public libraries and these civic agendas and activities.

“These leaders demonstrate that their public library is in the community’s business,” Joey Rodger, ULC President, said, “as well as the library business.”

The Urban Player Award winner will demonstrate the breadth and community-wide significance of leadership around a specific opportunity or community concern.  Successful applicants will describe how their activities impact the library’s standing in the community.  Nominees may include library trustees, directors, or exceptional senior personnel from ULC member libraries.

“We are very pleased to join with ULC in presenting this leadership award,” says Lana Porter, President and CEO of epixtech.  “The Urban Player Award will highlight leadership needs as well as tell the success stories of leaders who set examples for others to follow.”

Applications will be accepted beginning in Fall 2002.
