Maker Kits

Frisco Public Library, Texas

Education - Children & Adults | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

FPL created a collection of circulating Maker Kits that allow members to explore, innovate, and create at their own pace and in their own space. With 18 different themes across three difficulty levels, the 94 Maker Kits provide hands-on STEM learning for members at a variety of skill levels.

Challenge/Opportunity

Recognizing strong demand in the community for science and technology learning opportunities, but lacking the square footage to develop a Maker Space, FPL received a grant from IMLS (Institute and Museum and Library Services) and TSLAC (Texas State Libraries and Archives Commission) to create a collection of STEM-based technologies that members can check out and use at home. Minimal library space is required to house the collection. The quality of members’ experience benefits from extended time for hands-on experimentation and practice: in their own home, on their own schedule, and at their own pace.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Maker Kit collection enhances FPL’s reputation as a relevant, reputable resource for life-long learning.

Curiosity: New and unexpected, the Maker Kits literally open doors for outreach, garnering invitations for FPL to schools, temples, civic organizations, and Maker Faires.

Intellect: Each Maker Kit combines the technology itself with books and librarian-created guides to assist users. They seamlessly combine print material and technology to promote all styles of learning. Imagination. The Dash & Dot Robots introduce young children to coding. The Wacom Tablets allow teens to explore digital design. The Internet of Things kit encourages adults to innovate. And more!

Achieved Outcomes

As members became aware of the Maker Kits, demand outstripped collection size. The percentage of Kits either checked out or on the hold shelf quickly reached 100 percent. Currently, there are an average of 56 holds per theme (10 holds per Kit). Ninety percent of survey respondents indicate that “using this Maker Kit inspired them the learn/explore more.” With more than 840 projects completed, survey respondents report an increase in skill level, on average, from Beginner (1) to Advanced Beginner/Intermediate (2.5).
