The 2009 dues program is a five-tier, multiple-category program that bases dues on library budget size, making ULC membership an affordable option for libraries of all sizes and economic structures.  ULC delivers powerful benefits to all members.

Research that helps members leverage trends and position themselves more powerfully within their communities.  Timely, relevant and provocative research that benchmarks North America’s leading urban and metropolitan libraries and investigates the cutting edge of practices and emerging trends.

Recent research publications include:

All research is conducted by experts, generally from outside the library industry, providing an objective, fresh perspective.

Professional Development for all staff.   ULC provides affordable, accessible opportunities for libraries to engage with today’s leading thinkers on topics that move member organizations forward. Audio conferences, webinars and learning events designed to provide professional development for the entire member organization.

Recent development topics include:

Networking that opens the doors to fresh practices and advice that make libraries stronger.  Our members tell us that peer-to-peer networking available through ULC is our most powerful benefit.  Face-to-face and through electronic discussion groups that match peers based on senior management position or topic, ULC allows professionals to connect easily and effectively.  Most notable is the ULC2020.ORG members-only online community, which engages participants in exploring the future of public libraries virtually, by participating in conversations that ask the crucial questions about the future of libraries and tracks the trends that matter, as well as sharing organization innovations and service delivery solutions that will keep public libraries strong and relevant in the decades to come.

There are many other pathways for networking opportunities in ULC:

  • ULC website resources
  • ULC Exchange newsletter*, and
  • Full access to the ULC network through the ULC membership directory.*
  • Major conferences that tackle timely issues for urban libraries. ULC’s premier conferences convene national leaders, preparing ULC members to adapt quickly and deliver the changes that strengthen the library as an essential part of urban life.

    • The Partners for Success conference brings together library directors, trustees and their key elected officials around the community’s civic agenda.  Nashville, Tennessee, will host the next Partners conference “Regional Solutions for Local Vitality,” December 3-4, 2009.
    • Fast Forward is part of ULC’s Foresight 2020 initiative, an industry-wide, comprehensive program aimed at preparing public libraries for the future.  Fast Forward gives public libraries the tools to look out a dozen years, spot trends and adapt quickly, putting them in a proactive mode regardless of how the environment changes.  Fast Forward, held in Anaheim, California, June 26, 2008, provided over 200 ULC participants with ideas and tools to help them imagine, learn and innovate faster.

Unique Worldwide Learning opportunities for networking and fresh practices.  ULC organizes opportunities to meet and discuss common concerns with international counterparts.  The European Study Tour, October 6-11, 2008, will visit libraries in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. It will include a Copenhagen symposium “The Smart City and Its Libraries,” involving European, Australian, and North American colleagues.

Transformation.  Shape the future of the library and community by collaborating with leaders and peers in ULC programs that prepare for constant change and growth.  ULC programs help members engage new librarians and new library leaders that will transform our industry

Premium Member Benefits that create funds for travel and development.  In addition to all ULC member benefits, premium members participate in Professional Development Accounts.  Funds in these accounts may be applied to the expenses of ULC programs or related professional development activities, conferences, and learning events.  Funds deposited in these accounts must be used within 24 months of the date dues are paid.
