InventorCon

Lexington Public Library, Ky.

Workforce and Economic Development | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

A partnership between Lexington Public Library and Central Kentucky Inventors Council, InventorCon puts the inventing process in a clear glass so all can see how to research, patent, and market a product by meeting and talking with nationally-known experts and with inventors and their inventions.

Challenge/Opportunity

The availability of InventorCon, with its slate of presenting experts, inventors sharing their inventions, and would-be inventors soaking up every word, means people with the same interest can get nearly all the information they need at one place, at one time. InventorCon negates the need to spend multiple days or weeks talking with multiple agencies or people about the steps necessary to take an idea from a germ to a bona fide product found in the open market. Inventors openly share their experiences from pitfalls to profits.

Key Elements of Innovation

InventorCon is the largest gathering of entrepreneurs and inventors in the Midwest; a one-stop-shop for all things inventor. InventorCon shines a light on the Library's research materials for local and regional entrepreneurs researching grants and copyright, trademark and patent laws. InventorCon creates a whole new segment of library users and gives current library users another reason to return. The success of InventorCon has helped increase membership for Central Kentucky Inventors Council such that it moved its monthly meetings from a small venue to our Library system's largest meeting room with an adjacent makerspace, perfect for inventive minds and hands.

Achieved Outcomes

Knowledge and use of our business resources, both online and in-house, have increased. As InventorCon attendees — typically about 250 of them — see all the other activities in our library, they come back at other times to learn more about our Foucault pendulum, view exhibits in the gallery, attend a jazz concert or political forum in our theater, bring their children or grandchildren to a story time, buy items in our Book Cellar, sit and read, Book a Librarian, or check out books, audiobooks or magazines.
