Edge Initiative Featured in ICMA Magazine Cover Story

September 3rd, 2015

This September, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Public Management (PM) magazine’s cover story, "Strengthening the Library's Strategic Role: Prepare to Focus on Public Access Technology," shines a spotlight on how libraries are using the Edge Toolkit to measure the public access technology services they provide and better serve their communities. The article, written by Rashad Young, City Administrator for Washington, D.C., and Susan Benton, President and CEO of the Urban Libraries Council, explains how libraries are implementing action plans to remain trusted guides and technology gateways for building stronger communities.

As technology continues to evolve and the digitization of resources and services in our society becomes more widespread, libraries must remain critical anchors for digital access and equity in local communities. The article stresses the importance of sharing outcomes and sound data on library technology services with local government to support key strategic decisions on community priorities. This important function of the Edge Toolkit is highlighted through the experiences of four public libraries that have completed the Edge Assessment tool: San Antonio Public Library (TX), Guthrie Public Library (OK), El Paso Public Library (TX), and Greensboro Public Library (NC).

Library systems from Alexander County, North Carolina; New Hanover County, North Carolina; Anchorage, Alaska; and Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, also contributed to the article.
