"The use of public space is crucial. We found perfect partnerships between historic preservation and youth services interests in a couple of public park buildings.
Providing good mass transit and having good transit orientation is also important. The more we can do with transit orientation, the more we will increase access to these programs and facilities."
Mayor Rocky Anderson
"A lot of attention is being paid to space and the buildings that are there, asking how we can do a better job of using our public space and our community space, and how to better blend the two together.
We haven’t heard enough about "blocks." We know that we still have enormous disparities block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood."
Karen Pittman, Executive Director, Forum for Youth Investment
"I’ll tell you what works well and what doesn’t. What works really well in schools are things that involve siblings, for example, school-based health clinics. You get the siblings, the moms, you’re able to sign people up for the insurance programs. Libraries often tend to work well on commercial strips. We should be opening them up in supermarkets – think about it – those are the traffic patterns that I think make a lot of sense."
