Innovation Synopsis

Bricks & Beer is an outreach program that provides an opportunity for adult fans of LEGO® bricks to gather at a local restaurant to create, share ideas and enjoy a beer together.

Challenge/Opportunity

The Bricks & Beer program seeks to overcome the challenge of bringing new people into the library by meeting them in public spaces they already visit. It utilizes a familiar environment to ease apprehension and introduces the idea that the library is more than just books; we are LEGO® builders too. This program emphasizes that their library is not only about reading but also about creating, playing and exchanging ideas. Participants take pride in their builds which are then put on display throughout the library.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Bricks & Beer program builds relationships with the public, local restaurants, local businesses that sell LEGO® toys, and organizations that support Adult Fans of LEGO® bricks like PortLUG, the local adult LEGO® User Group. It broadens the identity of the library in the minds of the public. Many people think that the library is only a place to go to when you need a book or magazine; it’s not a place for creativity, fun or community building. By taking the library “outside” attendees of these programs build relationships with staff making it a less intimidating place to go to.

Achieved Outcomes

Since the implementation of the Bricks & Beer program the library has seen new users visit the library and bring their family members to other on-site programs. The library has been contacted by other restaurants and breweries with interest in hosting events. In addition, the library has obtained partner businesses and organizations for means to promote programs. Our displays of participants’ creations have generated lots of interest from library patrons and participation in the monthly event has increased.
