2012

Innovation Synopsis

A monthly electronic newsletter that highlights library programs and events and partnerships, and provides construction updates on Library projects.

Challenge/Opportunity

How to communicate relevant and timely information about library services to library customers consistently and in an easy to read format?

Key Elements of Innovation

The DC Public Library’s Office of Communication launched a monthly electronic newsletter for customers in September 2011. The publication, Beyond Words eNews, highlights library programs and events and partnerships, and provides construction updates on Library projects. Beyond Words allows customers the flexibility to filter through information that is of interest to them. The newsletter also links to the Library’s website, catalog and online calendar to help readers find exactly what they want. Library customers have the option of receiving Beyond Words in html, text or mobile formats. Existing and new customers automatically receive Beyond Words every month. Others can register to receive it through the Library’s website.

Achieved Outcomes

1. Since the launch of Beyond Words eNews, customers regularly provide positive comments about its content and attendance at some library programs have increased as a result of customers learning about events through Beyond Words. 2. In the last six months, subscriptions have increased from 113,679 to 120,006, an average of about 1,000 subscribers a month.
