HIGHSMITH TO SPONSOR ULC AWARD

The Highsmith Co., Inc., Fort Atkinson, Wis., has become the corporate sponsor for the Urban Libraries Council's (ULC) Award of Excellence.  With Highsmith's participation, the amount of the award has increased to $ 1,000, effective with the 1995 award year.

"Highsmith has had the opportunity to get to know ULC through its members and programs, and to develop sincere admiration for the particular quality and character of corporate leadership that ULC offers," said Duncan Highsmith, the company's president and chief executive officer.  "We are seeking opportunities to participate in the issues that confront libraries and to recognize important achievements.  We feel the Award of Excellence will give us those opportunities."

The Award of Excellence is designed to recognize a ULC member library for the creation or adaptation of a service that fills a need of an urban area, can be easily replicated, is not costly and has proven results.  Applications for the award are now available from the ULC office.  Telephone 708-866-9999 for information.  The deadline is December 1, 1995.

Founded in 1971, the Urban Libraries Council offers advocacy, consulting, research and programming services to its member libraries.  Membership is open to any public library serving a population of 50,000 or more in a Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area.
