Go Green : The Future of Libraries & Sustainable Communities
December 12, 2007

The last several years have seen the emergence of an expanded body of practical experience for integrating the process of community development with the natural environment. Sustainable community development is rapidly proving itself as both cost-effective and highly desirable in the marketplace.  Public libraries, as cornerstones of their communities, have an environmental role to play and should strive to keep sustainability issues at the forefront of their agenda.

• Why should libraries build “Green” in their communities?
• How do libraries bring environmental concerns into bottom-line operations?
• How do libraries work with communities to institutionalize positive environmental change?

  • Sandy Wiggins, Chair - U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org)
  • Diane Kresh, Director of Libraries, Arlington County Public Library (VA)
  • Carlton Sears, Director, Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (OH)
  • Eleanore Schmidt, Director of Library Services, Long Beach Public Library (CA)\
