Welcome Stranger : Local Responses to Global Migration
February 27, 2008

No phenomenon reshaping the world today is more dramatic or far-reaching than the massive global migration of people.  This ULC Audio Conference will examine emerging settlement patterns and effects of immigration on U.S. cities and counties.  Demographer Joseph Chamie will open the program with an overview of trends and impacts to watch.  Public library panelists will give examples of how they are collecting data on new immigrant and refugee populations; finding local partners; and making innovations to facility signage, orientation materials, collections, staffing, and programs.  The program will examine strategies that welcome new residents and speed their transitions to success and full engagement in civic life.

  • Joseph Chamie, Director, Center for Migration Studies
  • Carolyn Anthony, Director, Skokie Public Library (IL)
  • Luis Herrera, City Librarian, San Francisco Public Library (CA)
  • Homa Naficy, Coordinator, “The American Place”, Hartford Public Library (CT)
