Core Purpose: Community

Focusing Attention on the Library's Role in the Urban Community
Strong leadership in the civic agenda
Strategic partnerships
Catalyst for civic participation
Effective service to urban constituencies

ULC views the work of public libraries as “community” business, and supports this role by promoting effective work on urban civic agendas, building new alliances between local elected officials and library leaders, and forming partnerships with national and community service organizations. ULC encourages and promotes local library initiatives that invite community conversations and civic engagement, and actively cultivates new and effective services to diverse urban constituencies. ULC connects member libraries with experts working in the broad urban context, and convenes members to share experiences relating to successful community initiatives and challenges.
