MORE ABOUT THE ELEMENTS OF OUR ONLINE COMMUNITY

Innovation Conversations

“The future is already here. It’s just not very evenly distributed”
-William Gibson

This quote was recently brought up at ULC’s Fast Forward event and reminds us that our future could be someone else’s present.

In the SCENARIO PLANNING process, it is important to be aware of the rich and diverse innovation going on all around us. People all over the world (and not just in libraries) are constantly coming up with new methods of service and pushing the creative envelope into the future. But not all innovation is successful. This element strives to open up the conversation to not only what has truly worked, but what has been a miserable failure and why.

Do you know of a successful or failed innovation?

Let your colleagues know about it in the INNOVATION CONVERSATIONS section of www.ulc2020.org.

HOW TO USE THIS ELEMENT IN YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL WORK

Having your staff scan the horizon for successful and innovative ideas to duplicate in your organization is one way to talk about innovation. Or, it can go even deeper. Check out this post by Barbara Weedman at Nashville PL who used the following strategy to get the INNOVATION CONVERSATION flowing.

“Focus groups conducted by an outside marketing research firm are one part of our Strategic Conversation … The first question planned for the facilitator to ask is “What if the library went out of existence tomorrow, how would this affect you?” Group participants will read and rank three idea scenarios and pick their top three of eight futuristic service ideas for libraries. We are suggesting some to get the innovation conversation going, like higher-tier for-fee services, discounted downloadable material, ship-to-home or office models, combined library-retail-cafes, kiosks, and specialized branches.”
