MakerSpaces in Libraries

Across the globe, libraries and museums are building maker spaces where people gather to imagine and invent. Libraries offer cutting-edge STEM educational experiences and are key providers of innovative summer learning opportunities helping children succeed in school.

On Wednesday, June 18, 2014, the White House hosted the first-ever Maker Faire celebrating people of all ages who are inventing the future by using new tools and techniques to make just about anything in local communities and classrooms. Understanding that public libraries are key players in the makerspace movement, White House officials invited the ULC community to actively support this landmark event.

Over 100 ULC member libraries joined in a letter to President Obama, pledging the enduring commitment of public libraries to being centers of creation, especially for STEM learning initiatives. In addition, the descriptions of the libraries who have submitted descriptions of their makerspace initiatives (listed below) are included  in a national inventory of community-based digital media labs.
